Lighting Xeriscape and Desert Landscaping
Most landscape lighting advice is written for lawns and leafy hardwoods, which is not what
is in the average Albuquerque yard. Xeriscape lights beautifully, but it wants a different
approach.
Architectural plants like agave, yucca, and ocotillo have strong shapes, so a single
well-aimed uplight does more for them than a cluster of small fixtures. Ornamental grasses
glow when they are lit from behind rather than from the front. Mature cottonwoods and
sycamores need a fixture set well back with enough throw to reach the canopy, otherwise you
light the trunk and leave the tree dark. Gravel and decomposed granite bounce more light
than grass does, so pathway fixtures can usually run lower output than you would expect and
still read clearly.
Boulders, dry creek beds, and retaining walls are the features people forget to light, and
they are often the ones that give a desert yard its depth after sunset.
Built for the High Desert
Outdoor lighting in Albuquerque has to survive conditions that are harder on equipment than
most of the country. We sit above 5,000 feet, so ultraviolet exposure is intense year round
and it is brutal on cheap plastic lenses, fixture housings, and wire jackets. Spring brings
weeks of serious wind. Monsoon season pushes water into every connection that was not sealed
properly. Then the temperature swings 30 or 40 degrees between afternoon and night, over and
over, and anything that expands and contracts eventually works itself loose.
That is the real difference between a professional installation and a big box kit. Fixture
housings and lenses rated for sustained UV. Connections sealed rather than twisted together
and buried. Wire gauge sized so the run at the far end of the yard is as bright as the one
next to the transformer. Fixtures set at a depth and angle that survives wind and runoff.
The same durability logic applies to lighting that lives on the house itself, which is what
our permanent exterior lighting is built around.
